A large part of this is due to the fact that I completed the Bachelor of Music Program at Boston University in 1963, and also because I am an educator (Brown University, 1970-75) and observed the liberal arts programs on the ground (Brown University), I believe that educational programs should incorporate the study of art with other areas of study. This is not a surprise since an ethnomusicologist who has a PhD as well as an MA from UCLA is interested in the arts. There is no surprise that the department for ethnomusicology of UC Berkeley, where I taught from 1975 until 1976 is housed in the college of letters and Sciences' Department of Music. The possibility of pursuing multiple subjects is something I like. I love teaching, both students in the undergraduate level (majors as well as non-majors for whom I have written three texts namely Music in India Music in India: Classical Traditions, Thinking Musically as well as Music in Japan: Experiencing the Music of Japan, expressing Culture) as well as graduate students. Also, I rotate periods during which I focus on primarily teaching along with times when I incorporate administrative duties to my schedule (Chair of the Department of Music 1983-88, Dean of Undergraduate Advising 1992-98; Chair of the Deans of the College of Letters and Science 1994-98, Chairperson of the Group in Asian Studies, since 1999, and is now the as Chair of the Department of Music again).
